Guidance and assessment in online courses

Learning, guidance, evaluation, and feedback are different aspects of the same issue when it comes to setting the learning objectives. The assessment of the course are to motivators of the on-line course so it is advised to put special attention to methods of assessment. Instead of a single assessment method, it is advisable to implement learning assessment using different methods, as different learning outcomes and feedback during the learning process helps to fine-tune the implementation of teaching.

All of the learning assignments are included as part of the overall assessment of the course, as the students do not usually take on extra tasks for their own interest. Online course assessment is divided over the entire study period, for example, by assigning approved / completed part assignments that sums up to the total points/grades of the course. If necessary, a broader task or exam that summarizes the different learning objectives that can be evaluated numerically. It is though important to consider the teachers workload. The feedback to be given does not have to be individual and written, but the group feedback given as a video or audio file gives variation to both the teacher and the students.

The size of the student group sets limits on the guidance and assessment methods used, but the guidance and feedback from large student groups can also be interactive. The tutor can be supported by other instructors, students can make peer reviews and support self-assessment can be done in different ways, e.g. through surveys.

Teachers are often interested in how much students watch videos made for them. Statistics on opening video shows something, but it is better to add a short content-based survey to your video or text for student engagement. This will allow students to make a self-assessment and, as a teacher, an understanding of the current level of expertise.
